x86′d: How PC architecture could push Nintendo out of the next gen

x86'd: how PC architecture might be pushing Nintendo out of the next gen

It didn’t take long for console warriors, fanboys and a brutal media to take aim at Nintendo’s Wii U. The fledgling system was relentlessly teased for its name (seemingly even sillier than that of its predecessor) and a list of specifications certain to be outdone by its competitors. The device’s novel tablet controller stayed judgment for a short time, but it didn’t last long — a weak launch lineup, a slow operating system and software delays soured an already judgmental community.

Wii U detractors eventually climbed atop their soapboxes to issue their final verdicts: Nintendo is doomed. A premature prophecy, perhaps, but one that became increasingly difficult to argue with: diminishing sales and third-party desertion set a negative tone for the Wii U’s future. Dedicated fans (this editor among them) quickly fell into a defensive position, dismissing EA’s abandonment of the platform with promises of Nintendo’s own first-party wonders. Optimism reigns supreme. Still, with both Microsoft and Sony’s cards on the table, it’s clear that Nintendo is about to take another hit.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

elephantquest

When someone tells me about a “platformer”, my first thought is that it’s probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you’ve “specialized” your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you’d like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there’s a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

Security firm RSA attacked using Excel-Flash one-two sucker punch

RSA attacked using Flash vulnerability

It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA’s SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe’s Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) — a backdoor Trojan — called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA’s internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA’s two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year — and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: “The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in.”

What we’d like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe’s lackadaisical approach to patching Flash — or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe’s attention?

This Week On The TechCrunch Gadgets Podcast: All Google I/O, All The Time

gadgets130517Google’s major developer conference, Google I/O, went down this week. Was it a bit of a letdown? Probably. Did cool stuff still come out of the event? Eh? Maybe? We discuss these topics and more this week on the TC Gadgets podcast. In fact, we even had Frederic Lardinois join as a guest, along with John Biggs, Matt Burns, Jordan Crook (that’s me!), Romain Dillet, and Darrell Etherington as Bob McKenzie.

O’Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only

O’reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one “Deal of the Day”, which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they’ve created a discount code — DDJPN — that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they’ve raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you’ve been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

Inventory List for iPhone review: Manage your stuff simply and easily

Some of us have a tendency to accumulate a lot more possessions than others. Whether you own a business, have multiple properties, or just have lots of things to keep track of, Inventory List can help. Unlike profesional inventory apps, Inventory List lets you add things and track them in your own way through the use of storage banks and locations.

There are lots of subscription inventory options out there but not all of us need that many features. Inventory List makes a pretty happy medium without being too over the top. The first thing you’ll be asked to do is start adding locations and storage banks. Inventory List works as a nested hierarchy in order to keep track of your items with the top most level being a physical geographical location. For many of us this will be home, office, summer home, beach house, or any other location you need to inventory.

After you’ve created actual places, you can move on to creating locations within that space. For homes, this may be kitchen, bedroom, bathroom while at work it could be storage room, waiting room, or any other space you have a need to inventory items for. You’ll also be given one more location spot that is nested so you can drill down to items such as cabinets, storage bins, or something else. I personally found this space better suited for categories instead of locations where I like to break things up into electronics, furniture, or any other category of item I’d like to inventory.

To add an item to Inventory List, you’ll have to be drilled down all the way inside a physical location, space, and secondary space. This is one feature I wasn’t too crazy about. Some people won’t have a need for the secondary space and since categories are already supported when creating items, it seems redundant. A nice option would be for the user to be able to choose whether or not they even need that second location classification within settings and have the ability to disable it.

Once you’re drilled down into a list, you can start adding individual items or quantities of a specific item. You can include a name, price, SKU (only if you want), a photo, and additional notes. This item will then be shown inside that list. You can also toggle between locations and individual inventory items on the home menu of Inventory List.

When it comes to syncing your items, Inventory List supports Dropbox sync and CSV export which should help keep active backups of all your items in case you ever needed to restore them or share them with others.

The good

  • Easy to see icons with quite a few choices which can help visually identify lists and items faster
  • Much simpler and easier to manage than advanced inventory programs
  • The drill down of categories helps to keep organization on point

The bad

  • Secondary location classification isn’t always needed and should have a way to be turned off
  • Dropbox sync was finicky and kept yelling about development mode until it finally went through on the 5th or 6th try

The bottom line

Inventory List is really made for people that have a large amount of items to track such as contractors or property managers. If you’re in one of these professions, Inventory List is a must have. It’s also great for self employed individuals or those who many have storage units they’d like to keep a better handle on.

iPhone owners who aren’t self employed or work with a moving inventory won’t find much need for it, but those that haven’t yet found a solution they’re happy with should definitely give Inventory List a hard look.

Yahoo! buys Tumblr, and the CEO promises not to screw it up

Having been much rumored in recent days, today came the official announcement that Yahoo! had in fact closed a deal to acquire Tumblr. The deal is reported to be worth a cool $1.1 billion in cash, and CEO Marissa Meyer said her piece:

“We promise not to screw it up. Tumblr is incredibly special and has a great thing going. We will operate Tumblr independently. David Karp will remain CEO. The product roadmap, their team, their wit and irreverence will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve. Yahoo! will help Tumblr get even better, faster.”

As far as opening lines go, that one’s right up there. She was of course referring to concerns that Yahoo! might change the Tumblr as we currently know it, and make it more ‘corporate’ and basically, well, screw it up. Yahoo! gets hold of Tumblr’s community, and Tumblr gets a nice injection of cash. Good for both parties then, right?

There were early reports of record numbers taking their Tumblr blogs and high-tailing it over to rival blogging platform, WordPress. But, in reality, the numbers talked about — 72,000 in one hour — barely register in the grand scheme of things.

So, Tumblr users, are you concerned about the future of your favorite blogging platform? If so, why? Where else would you go? Not at all concerned? Let us know too!

Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on OS X or Windows with PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze

iOS 4.3.1 jailbreakA jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie — who else? — has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you’ll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week — but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple’s updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!

Tasty Planet is a fun flash game where you eat everything in sight

tastyplanet

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by “eating” the dirt; or so he thinks. That’s how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you’re not really a toilet cleaner after all — you’re a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that’s smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow — and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it’s a really cute game, and there’s no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you’re able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can’t touch any critter larger than yourself – you’ll get “bitten” and become smaller. In the beginning you’re so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you’re big enough that touching larger animals doesn’t kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you’re not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don’t touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It’s available for iOS, too.

Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game

sticks

Sticks is another one of those rare games where the intro is actually worth watching. It introduces you to office worker Bob, who is basically a wage slave fantasizing about a better existence.

Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says “Sticks.” This is where the game starts.

Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob — but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you’re done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.

The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn’t get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It’s still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple’s mobile platform. And it’s even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple’s tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you’re searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as “touch and decide,” Bing Voice Search is also built in — making it easy to start a query without using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Google’s Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views

Google Blogger Mosaic Dynamic View

Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy ‘Dynamic Views’. There’s a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails — click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views — and really, why weren’t they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive — which we’re sure it will be — these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You’ll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.

Install the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update regardless of your carrier

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update — never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn’t work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team’s Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device — regardless of your carrier.

  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn’t listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.

Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart’s content. Let’s just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we’re supposed to receive Mango.

BlackBerry May Be Dabbling In Phablets With A 5-Inch Z10 Refresh

z10-5BlackBerry’s wryly jovial CEO Thorsten Heins spent quite a bit of time talking up the new mid-range Q5 at this morning’s BlackBerry Live keynote address, but the folks in Waterloo may be working on a follow-up smartphone that’s staggeringly different than the one we saw today. Burrito Bison is a simple game for gummy bear lovers

burritobison

Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you’re into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you’re a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you’re abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you’re being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don’t give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It’s a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

Best apps for iPhone photographers

Best apps for iPhone photographers

It’s been said time and time again that the camera on the iPhone is an excellent camera. In fact, it’s become such a popular camera that there’s a whole genre of photography known as ‘iPhoneography’. iPhone photographers not only use the camera and lens built into their iPhone, but also an assortment of apps to edit, enhance, and show off their work. There are so many great apps out there, so we’ve narrowed it down to a few of our favorites.

KitCam

The first app we’re going to take a look at is a fantastic tool for taking your photos. With it, you can adjust exposure, white balance, lenses, and film before you even take the photo. It also features convenient shooting modes like a timer, multi-exposure, time-lapse, and more. You can also view each photo’s histogram and make adjustments to levels, brightness, contrast, and saturation. If you’re looking to take more control over your iPhone’s camera, definitely grab KitCam.

See also:

Photoforge2

KitCam does offer some nice editing options, but if you want even more, Photoforge2 is an excellent choice that’s bursting with advanced controls. The most notable is the ability to use multiple layers and masks and make advanced adjustments including curves, levels, color balance, channel mixer, white balance, noise reduction, and more. You can also add over 25 different filters and FX and combine different films lenses, filters, and textures.

See also:

VSCO CAM

Complex and advanced controls are great, but sometimes you want something quick and easy, yet awesome — like VSCO CAM. This gem features a sleek design with minimal processing options, but the options are good. There’s a nice variety and all the basics are covered. VSCO CAM is a great app to have in your grab bag of editing tools.

Facetune

If you’re shooting portraits with your iPhone camera, then Facetune should be your go-to app for touching up blemishes, smoothing out skin, enhancing eyes, and even reshaping. Seriously, Facetune is amazing. Check out the review for a full rundown.

Fuzel Pro

Collages (or “storyboards”) are an excellent way to show off multiple photos at once. They are a great way to tell a story. The App Store is also flooded with apps that help you build collages, but the one I keep coming back to is Fuzel Pro. It has an artistic design, makes it quick and easy to add photos, and gives you control over the layouts of your collages.

See also:

Photolettering

After editing your photo to perfection, you may realize that it would make a great poster, sign, or inspirational message. With Photolettering, you can do just that using fonts from world-renowned type foundry House Industries. It’s free with a few fonts and additional fonts are available via in-app purchase. If you’re looking to mix photography with typography, Photolettering is the way to go.

See also:

Instagram

You didn’t think I’d get through an article about photography apps without mentioning Instagram, did you? Although there are a lot of things I would love to see changed about Instagram (especially forced square crops), there’s no denying it’s usefulness as a way to share photos. Yes, there’s a lot of snapshots of pets and kids (my own included) and plates of food, but there is also a lot of amazing photography being shared on Instagram, as well.

How Much the Starship Enterprise Costs, Google I/O Goodies, And More

It’s been a big, big week. Google I/O hit this week, bringing along a whole bunch of Android updates, if not a new version or any actual hardware. From the Editor’s Desk: After Google I/O

Phil Nickinson at Google I/O

Three days just isn't enough to absorb all the info from Google I/O. In fact, it's physically impossible to get to every session, be it due to overlaps, overcrowding (only so many seats) or overexhaustion. It's a good problem to have, though, and Google handles it quite well.

In case you've been living under a rock, in addition to streaming a number of the key sessions live, Google also records them, so you can watch at your leisure. And that's what I've been doing since returning home from San Francisco, the better to get a grasp on all the new features and services announced. And if you've never seen one of these developer sessions before, you might be surprised just how entertaining and engaging they can be. This was my fourth Google I/O, and it still catches me a little off guard.

You can watch the developer sessions on YouTube.

Another surprise this year was the keynote address. Consolidated into a single address this year (as opposed keynotes the first two days at previous events), it went a whopping 3.5 hours. (Longer if you could the time spent waiting in line.) And it was time well-spent. There was so much information crammed into our brains in far less time than it took many of us to even get to San Francisco. But between all the new Google Play services, and the new Google Maps, and the improved Google+, and the Google Play game services — and that's just the major Android stuff — I could have gone another hour, easy.

There's not a lot I can say about Larry Page's appearance — his first such speech at Google I/O in the years I've attended — that you can't get from watching the recording. (And I recommend you do.) But I will say this: I've always believed a good CEO should overreach a little. The more Apple-friendly pundits love to poke fun at some of the things Eric Schmidt has said over the years, and perhaps rightfully so. There's certainly a fine line between cheerleading, inspiring and downright crazy talk. And occasionally crossing that line opens you up to jokes and criticism, but I love the sort of head-first-into-the-wall mentality. It's what makes Google Google, it's what gets things done, and it's what moves us forward.

A few more thoughts on the week that was:

iTunes gets updated, check out the new MiniPlayer!

There’s a new iTunes update in town, and at the top of the list of new goodies is a new look MiniPlayer. The tiny little iTunes window has had a makeover that now includes a progress bar for the track currently playing, alongside your album artwork too. It may well be tiny, but it does look a lot nicer now, so good job on that front, Apple.

Also getting the visual makeover treatment is the songs view. With this latest update you can enjoy all your album artwork whilst in songs view. It’s a small touch, but I know from personal tastes that having album artwork on show just makes the whole experience a little more pleasurable. But, that’s just me.

That’s not all though. Also improved in iTunes 11.0.3 is support for multi-disc albums. No more will separate discs be listed as separate albums, all discs will now appear in your iTunes library as a single album. Something I’ve wanted for some time, as I’m sure countless other users have.

Grab a copy of iTunes 11.0.3 from the download link below, or by heading into Software Update on your Mac, or iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC and hitting check for updates. Once you’re done, head on back here and let us know how you like the new updates.

Iconia W3 tablet live on Acer’s Finnish website, confirms 8.1 inches of Windows 8 Pro

Iconia W3 tablet live on Acer's Finnish website, confirms 8.1 inches of Windows 8 Pro

Info about the Iconia W3 Windows 8 tablet has already slipped out a few times, and now this 8.1-incher is live on Acer’s Finnish website. While there’s no mention of price or availability, the specifications list matches what’s already been leaked. You’re looking at Windows 8 Pro running atop an Intel Atom Z2760 CPU, aided by 2GB of RAM. Other features include a 1,280 x 768 touchscreen, an eight-hour battery, up to 64GB of storage, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. Port lovers will be pleased to find micro-HDMI and micro-USB hookups onboard, as well as a microSD slot. Microsoft Word comes pre-installed, but there’s no concrete info about the optional full-size keyboard dock — other than that it exists, anyway. It’ll likely be closer to June when we’ll be staring at it in the flesh, so you’ll have to settle for the info at the source link for now.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura

While we’ve still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they’ve discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It’s a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there’s a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme’s wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon

Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you’re viewing — such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder’s view style.

It’s clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It’s slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There’s more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That’s not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Pocket Casts updated with improvements and fixes galore

Pocket Casts

Continuous playback over notifications and more bug fixes than you can shake a stick at

Since making the move to a completely new design with Pocket Casts 4, a few lingering bugs have been piling up. Those are getting squashed today, along with a few new feature adds, with a big update to the app today. First up, the update brings the option to have playback not be interrupted by notifications, which is still set to be off by default. The sharing menu for podcasts has also received a tweak that gives you three simple options — email, other apps, copy link — to cut down on the interface clutter. You can now mark every episode from a certain podcast as "unplayed", and long-pressing on the "next" button will skip to the next item in a playlist.

Some of the big user-facing bugs, such as duplicate episode downloads and action bar bugs that showed extra action buttons have been notably fixed. When episode downloads fail, they now properly show up in the "not downloaded" filter once again. There are also many more back-end issues that have been fixed as well. If you haven't had a chance to see Pocket Casts in action, now may be the time — grab a download from the Play Store link above.

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps — and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you’re in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering “status deals,” which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru — though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby’s, Finish Line, Macy’s, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

Who has the most satisfying customer experience in the UK? That’ll be Apple Retail

Leading UK consumer campaigner, Which?, has conducted a survey into customer satisfaction across UK high-street retail stores. While the likes of WHSmith and carrier, EE, scored near the bottom, is there any surprise who topped the table? Apple Retail Stores.

Over 11,000 UK consumers responded to the survey, with Apple coming out on top with an 85% satisfaction score. Apple Retail Stores were praised specifically for their “unique look and feel” and “great customer service.”

Apple Retail Stores do stand out among their competitors. The look and feel is indeed unique, but such customer services as EasyPay allowing payment via your iTunes account through your iPhone sets Apple apart from the rest. It’s no doubt a great result for Apple, but 11,000 people doesn’t come close to the numbers that pass through Apple Retail Stores each and every day.

Personally, I can’t recall a visit to an Apple Store that I’d consider unsatisfactory, and though they’re often extremely busy, there’s never much of a wait to be dealt with by a member of the store team. Not counting the Genius Bar, of course. But how about you, have you ever had a bad experience in an Apple Retail Store?

Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official — but alpha-quality — Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store — you can buy and download music from within Banshee — but unfortunately it’s only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions — and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select ‘play after’ to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up — it now looks a whole lot smarter — and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it’s shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It’s almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011

Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a ‘self’ post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments — and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you’ve ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you’ll know that it’s a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you’ve never backed up your important files — or if you only back up sporadically — do it on World Backup Day!

It’s not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there’s always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don’t forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools — $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows

ommwriter

I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I’m all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I’m of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it’s beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing — in case something like WriteMonkey’s dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter’s features and creative soundscapes.

Screen Shot 2013-05-15 at 3.55.58 PMIt’s rare to see a company that is so established yet so cutting edge as Shapeways. The company, founded in 2007 as a spin-off of Royal Philips Electronics, began as a one-off 3D printing service that offered basic plastic items for sale online. Google Play Services gives control of Android back to Google

Google Play Services

With API services outside of the core operating system, Google is taking back control of Android

We didn't get a new version of Android this year at Google I/O. You can read all the lamenting and gnashing of teeth over this across the web, so I'll spare you the play by play of how it was supposed to happen (a proverbial lock), but didn't.

Instead, I'll tell you a little bit about what we did get — a huge updated version of Google's service APIs, which turns out is much better.

Wait. Better? How can an app I never wanted that got magically pushed to my phone be better than a newer, higher number in my about phone screen? That's crazy talk, right?.

Turns out, that little app is a powerful beast. Read on.

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.

It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

None of those are quite like the foc.us, however, which serves up transcranial direct-current simulation (tDCS) — a controversial form of neurosimulation that transmits current to a particular area of the brain. Originally used to help patients with brain injuries, tDCS has supposedly been found to increase cognitive performance in healthy adults. These claims haven’t been proven yet though, and shocking your own cranium isn’t exactly FDA approved.

Still, the foc.us is one of a few tDCS headsets designed for the consumer market and can, the inventor Michael Oxley claims, improve your working or short-term memory when the electrodes are placed on your prefrontal cortex. A low-intensity current is passed through the different nodes, exciting that part of the brain. Interestingly, Oxley is positioning it as a way to boost your video gaming prowess for the “ultimate gaming experience,” a concept we found a little odd. That said, you don’t actually have to wear the headset while shooting up bad guys or other brain-draining tasks. The idea behind the foc.us headset is to put it on your noggin, fire it up, and wait for around five to ten minutes, then take it off and go about your day. We did just that and all the gory details are after the break.

ZenWheels Micro Car review

Remote control cars are always fun, but the downside of the classic remote control cars is that they are fairly large and require an even larger area to play on.  Then someone invented those micro RC cars that are pocket-friendly, but those RC cars only go one speed, which is super fast and right off [...]

No new EA games in development for Wii U, company reveals

No new EA games in development for Wii U, company reveals

Earlier this month, EA DICE’s Johan Andersson dropped a major bomb: Frostbite 3 won’t be ported to the Wii U. The news meant that the company’s next-gen franchises were doomed to skip the console: No Battlefield 4, no Star Wars games, no Mass Effect spin-off. Now, EA’s Jeff Brown is saying the same fate applies to all of the company’s titles, telling Kotaku that the company has “no games in development for the Wii U currently.”

The confirmation isn’t too surprising, but it is a crushing blow to fans who were banking on EA’s 2011 promise to support the console. Although Brown wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the company returning to the platform, Kotaku was told that EA feels it fulfilled that promise by releasing games like Mass Effect 3 and Need For Speed Most Wanted during the Wii U’s formative months. Despite the loss of third party support, Nintendo has previously urged gamers to be patient. After all, E3 is just around the corner.

Portland’s TriMet ushers in mobile ticketing for smartphones

Portland's TriMet transit service dives into mobile ticketing for smartphones

Not all of Portland, Oregon is dreaming of the ’90s. As proof of that, the region’s transit system, TriMet, is taking a step into the future by launching the beta test of an electronic ticketing system that lets riders purchase fares from their smartphones. The ambitious effort extends to all of TriMet’s major operations, which includes city busses, the MAX light rail, the WES commuter rail and the Portland Streetcar. As it stands, 150 participants will take part in the beta trial before the program opens to all riders later this summer. The push toward modernization is made possible by a Portland-based company, GlobeSherpa, which has developed a payment system and ticket validation app that also allows for fleet optimization and provides service alerts to riders. Currently, the TriMet app is available for Android and iOS, but GlobeSherpa tells us that it’ll deliver future versions for BlackBerry and Windows Phone. Hit up the break for a peek at what’s in store for The City of Roses.
